Frequently
Asked Questions:
What colors are available on your steel doors? Most steel door models are available in white, almond, brown and sandtone. A select few of our premium doors are available in hunter green and gray. See you local dealer or retailer for exact model or color availability. Can I paint my door? Yes! All of our steel doors can be painted with a quality latex paint only. Do not use an oil base paint. (Oil base paint creates a chemical reaction which causes the original finish to bubble up and peel off.) With latex paint, there is no prep work needed other than to make sure the door is clean and dry before painting. There is no change in the section warranty, as long as the above guidelines are followed. For more information please refer to the Door Painting & Window Maintenance file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. What type of spring system comes with my new door? The type of springs can depend on many variables. The model, size, and place of purchase are all factors. Typically doors 10' wide or less come with standard Extension springs. Most doors over 10' wide come with standard or EZ-SET® torsion springs. See your local dealer or retailer for the type of spring system that comes standard with your door. What is headroom? Headroom is the distance between the top of the door and the lowest point of the ceiling or any obstruction such as a garage door opener rail, pipes, or ductwork. How much headroom do I need? This depends on what type of spring system that your new door will have. For Extension springs, a minimum of 10" is required for the door to operate. Torsion springs require 12". Remember, these amounts are for door operation only. If you are installing a garage door opener, additional headroom is required. Check with the opener manufacturer for additional headroom requirements. I do not have the needed amount of headroom. Is there something I can do? Yes! Low headroom kits are available from your local dealer or retailer. If your door came with Extension springs, the needed headroom can be reduced to 4-1/2”. Torsion springs systems can be reduced to 9-1/2”. For more information, please refer to the Low Headroom Options file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. What is backroom? The backroom is the distance from the garage door to the back wall of the garage. The door height plus 18" is required for proper door installation. Additional backroom is required for the installation of an automatic garage door opener. What is sideroom? A measurement from each side of the door opening, outward to the nearest wall or obstruction within the garage. Allow on each side of the door I do not have a standard size door. Can you make a door to fit my needs? Standard door widths are 8', 9', 10', 12', 14', 15', 15'6", 16', and 18'. Some models can be custom ordered in 2" increments (8'2", 8'4", 8'6", etc.). Check with your local dealer or retailer for custom width/model availability. See our Panel Arrangements page or heck with your local dealer or retailer for custom height/model availability. I am building a new garage; what size should I make the rough opening for my door? The rough opening should be the same size as the door you wish to purchase. The door fits against the opening from the inside. The rough opening should be finished with an exterior perimeter seal or stop molding to seal out rain and wind. For more information, please refer to the Preparing the Opening file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. I hear a lot about R-value. What is it and is it important? R-value is a measurement of thermal efficiency of a door, or how well it insulates. Insulation is an important factor to consider when purchasing a garage door. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your garage, or if you have a room directly above or adjacent to your garage, you will want to purchase a door that offers a high R-value. If your garage is not attached to your home, or you are not concerned with insulation, you can purchase a door with a lower R-value or no insulation at all. When referring to the gauge of the steel skin, does a lower number mean thicker steel? Yes! The lower the gauge, the thicker (and stronger) the steel. For example, 24-gauge steel is thicker than 27-gauge steel. However, a “sandwich” constructed door with two 27-gauge steel skins and a bonded insulated core is stronger than a “steel frame” door with a single 24-gauge steel skin. Is everything included in the door package to install the door? The door package includes the sections, track, spring assembly, and hardware required to install the door. Several additional items can be purchased from your local dealer or retailer to aid in installation. These items are: 1. Rear track hanger kit for attachment of the horizontal track to the ceiling in the back of the garage. Existing hangers generally can be reused. However, we do recommend that you inspect them to ensure they are in good condition and positioned properly for the new installation. 2. Stop molding or perimeter seal for the exterior sides and top of the opening. 3. Some models do not include the opener reinforcement bracket. This can be done with a reinforcement kit or it can be done with standard 13-gauge punched angle iron. See installation manual for details. 4. Low headroom hardware. This is required if there is limited headroom between the top of the door and the ceiling or roof rafters. I live in an area that requires garage doors to withstand high winds. Do you offer these types of doors and how do I determine which rating that I need? We offer garage doors to meet specific wind speeds. These doors have added steel reinforcement struts, upgraded springing and heavy-duty commercial grade track and rollers to meet wind speeds and gusts from 75 mph to 170 mph. Your local building department can give you information on which ratings your county requires. How much does a garage door cost? We sell exclusively through our network of distributors and they are best able to provide you with current prices. The price you pay for a garage door depends on a number of factors. The model, size, options and site conditions all influence the price of your door. In addition, most of our distributors also install the door for you and will provide you with an installed price. Consult our "Where to Buy" to find a distributor near you.
What tools will I need to install my garage door? 1. “C” Clamps or Locking Pliers 2. Hammer 3. Screwdrivers 4. Tape Measure 5. Level 6. Socket Wrench Kit I am getting ready to remove my old garage door. It has standard torsion springs. How can I get the tension off the springs? Torsion springs are under high tension. Unwinding standard torsion springs requires specific tools and training. Due to the dangerous nature of this process, we recommend you contact a local door dealer to remove the tension from the springs. Can I replace only the sections, and not use the new track and springs? To avoid installation problems which could result in personal injury or property damage, use only the track and springs specified and supplied with the door. Do not attempt to reuse the old track, springs, or hardware. Failure to use all supplied hardware will void the factory warranty. My new door was supplied with EZ-SET torsion springs. Do I need the wood anchor pad as described in the installation manual? No! The wood anchor pad is needed only when standard torsion springs are used. Do I need to reinforce my garage door if I am installing an automatic opener? Yes! Failure to properly install opener reinforcement will result in damage to the door and will void the warranty. The reinforcement configuration differs depending on the model number and size of the garage door. Please refer to the installation manual supplied with the garage door for specific instructions. For more information, please refer to the Attaching an Automatic Opener to "Pan Construction" Doors Using Punched Angle file listed on the Installation Manuals page available here or Attaching an Automatic Opener to "Sandwich Construction" Doors Using Punched Angle available here. I have a window section in my door. Do I have a choice on the placement of that section? The window section can be placed in either the third (2nd from top) or the fourth (top) section. My door “hangs” in the opening – is that normal? Can I fix it? Normally a door will hang about 4 – 6 inches into the opening. This helps keep tension on the cable so it does not fall off the cable drum or pulley. If you have a door with an electric opener, it can be adjusted so the door is pulled completely even with the opening, if necessary, to provide additional clearance for a vehicle. How do I install my lockset? For lockbars please refer to the Lock Bar Assembly Instructions file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. For a cable lock please refer to the Snap Latch Lock Assembly Instructions file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. How do I install the struts provided with my garage door? Please refer to the Installing Struts file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here.
Does my steel garage door require maintenance? Your garage door is the largest moving object on your home, and we recommend that the following maintenance is performed on an annual basis. Please refer to the Door Maintenance file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here for a detailed description of the maintenance requirements. I scratched my door. Is touch-up paint available? Yes! Touch-up paint is available from your local dealer or retailer. I live in Florida and purchased one of your doors with impact windows – how should I clean them? This window is made with Lexan™. Refer to the windcode portion of our website for Impact Window cleaning instructions by clicking here. Where can I buy parts? We sell parts exclusively through our distribution network. See “Where to Buy” on our website. Can I fix my door myself? Our doors are designed to last, but some parts do occasionally wear out or become damaged. If you are reasonably handy and follow the instructions with the parts or in your installation manual, you can do some repairs yourself. Some of these parts include rollers, bottom seal, hinges, lift handles, windows and window inserts. While some homeowners have the skill and tools to handle it themselves, we recommend that replacing springs, door sections, tracks and operators should be handled by a door professional. See our Installation and Care and Teach Me About Garage Door areas on our website for additional information.
My door has no insulation; how can I insulate the door? Insulation kits are available from your local dealer or retailer. What horsepower garage door opener do I need with my door? Generally a 1/3 horsepower opener is sufficient for any single car doors and a 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower for some of the heavier double car doors. Remember, the door must be reinforced prior to the attachment of a garage door opener. Are replacement sections available for my door? Yes! If we still manufacture the model number door you have, replacement sections are available from your local dealer or retailer. If your door was manufactured in the last 10 years, we can identify the model number of your door by the 15-16 digit serial number in the interior bottom section of the door. Exposure to the elements over time will alter the color of the section; therefore it may not be a perfect match. Can I install my old garage door opener on my new door? We recommend you check with the opener manufacturer to ensure that the unit is equipped with all of the safety features required by law today to ensure the safety of your family. Upon verification that the unit meets the current government requirements, just about any opener can be installed. It is important to remember to reinforce the door before you attach the automatic opener. Back to Top |
